Apocalyptica Arcanum is an alternate earth history steampunk/fantasy hybrid world created for a D&D 5th Edition campaign of the same name.
The basic premise of the world is that sometime in the 18th century a magical meteor struck the Earth, knocking over its rotational axis and infusing the flora and fauna with magical properties. The topography of the earth was vastly changed as a result of the meteor strike. Humans have mutated into the various races and most humans view these mutant races as sub-human. Centuries have passed since the meteor struck.
The world is divided between nation states among the various regions, but each has very loose control over its territory. Laws are practically unenforced outside of populated areas. Major cities are large and overpopulated. Most are rife with disease and pollution.
Meteor fragments ("Shards") are the most prized objects in the world as they have the ability to imbue magic into mundane items. While they once were found in plenty, they are now very scarce.
